Unions and Societies Officer: Laura Doherty
The Unions and Societies Officer (USO for short) oversees and promotes all the extracurricular activities within College such as the many University College Sports teams and Societies. They also are one of the JCR’s leading representatives to the Durham Student’s Union (DurhamSU), attending Assembly, and in charge of running DurhamSU elections and events in College. They also work with our arch-rivals Hatfield to put on the Castle-Hatfield Day held in Epiphany where the colleges do battle on the sports pitches during the day, before coming together for a joint Formal in the evening.

Hi everyone, my name is Laura and I am this years’ USO! I am studying Mathematics and going into my third and final year. This year, as the Senior DurhamSU Rep I will be representing the views of the JCR at Durham Students’ Union Assembly, making sure you all know what’s going on there and running DurhamSU campaigns and elections in College. As Sports and Societies Officer I will be helping ensure the smooth running and promotion of all of Castle’s many Sports Clubs and Societies throughout the year, working closely with Team Durham, Durham Student Theatre and Music Durham. I will also be assisting our JCR Treasurer, Alex with the Sports and Societies accounts.
During my time at Durham I have got heavily involved in different activities inside and outside of college. Over the past two years I have represented Durham against other Universities in Dance Competitions and last year was the Competition Coordinator for Instep Dance Society. Within college I have previously been involved in June Ball Committee, co-choreographed the Castle Panto, rowed for UCBC in the women’s 1st VIII, 1st IV and even had a stint at netball in UCNC’s C team. My other interests include running, theatre and tea!
Please feel free to contact me with any questions, opinions or ideas, I would love to hear from you. I can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org, my Durham email or on Facebook.
