Unions and Societies Officer: Benjamin Rich
The Unions and Societies Officer (USO for short) is primarily responsible for managing and promoting the teams, clubs and societies in College. They are also represent the JCR to outside bodies such as Team Durham, Experience Durham, and the Durham Student Union. They also run events such as Castle-Hatfield Day (where sports teams compete with their bitter rivals and have a joint formal in the evening), College Festival of Sport, and Give it a Go week.
Hi everyone! I’m Ben, the USO for 2017-18. I’m a third year finalist reading Classics. My primary role this year will be to ensure the smooth running of the various sports teams and societies which you all hopefully take part in, part of which includes working with the Treasurer, Carl Nabert, to regulate subs payments and ensure expenses are dealt with fairly. I will also be working with the Development Officer, Owen Sparkes, to promote sponsorship opportunities in Castle. New this year will be Publicity Officers, who will help me to run aspects of Castle social media and journalism. Of course, I will also represent the JCR’s views to the DurhamSU, Team Durham and other important outside bodies.
My personal experience mostly revolves around DU sports. I have coxed for the university for the last two years, including 1st Team representation, BUCS and Henley elite participation. I also play Fives for the University Squad, and have exec experience with both them and DUBC. Finally, I have taken part in various sports teams in Castle, such as coaching UCBC’s novices.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions, opinions or ideas, I would love to hear from you. I can be reached at email@example.com, my Durham email (firstname.lastname@example.org) or send me a message on Facebook.
