The Undercroft Bar, affectionately known at ‘The Undie’, is the main social space in college and undoubtedly the best bar in Durham. The combination of being the focal point of the college – a place to meet, chat, dance and relax (and even revise during the day in exam period) – with a wide selection of drinks at prices that will bring you back night after night, and the characterful setting makes the Undie a very special place indeed. Our college drink is ‘Smenergy’, Durham’s oldest college drink, so make sure to give it a try!
The Undie plays hosts to regular events (‘Ents’) – live music (‘Mundie in the Undie’), Balls, Karaoke nights – as well as being transformed into a private nightclub on occasion during freshers’ week as well as for ‘Hounds’ (which are castle only). We also host regular pub quizzes and often open early to show major sporting events on our tv screens.
During term-time much of the running of the bar is undertaken by the Undercroft Chair and Undercroft Vice-Chair. Members of the JCR serve behind the bar as part of the Undercroft Committee. The committee members are paid to work on bar each evening and are an incredibly social team. Previous experience of working on a bar is not essential, and it’s a great way of integrating with other academic years.
