The JCR (Junior Common Room) is the undergraduate community in University College studying here for their 3 or 4 year courses. Castle is unlike any other group of students, whether in Durham or elsewhere in that we are extremely lucky to be in such magnificent surroundings. But what truly sets us apart are the efforts by so many members of the JCR to ensure that this is the most vibrant place possible to spend your three or four years as an undergraduate.
Getting Involved
This unparalleled sense of community is fostered by the huge numbers of positions within the JCR that you can be elected or selected to fulfill. These positions all make a real difference in our college experience. Whether it be a paid position working on the Undercroft Bar, or assisting in setting up one of our Balls, the options immediately open to you as an undergraduate are vast, so do get involved! In the following pages and across the website are some of the officers in college that you can become, and which will help to shape your time in Castle, if you have any questions feel free to contact them!
Executive Officers
The Executive Committee is responsible for the running of college on a day-to-day basis. There are eleven officers on the Exec, all of whom have been elected or selected to serve your best interests. If you have a problem in college, these people are your first point of contact.
Non Executive Officers
The Non-Exec positions that are elected or selected throughout the year all make our community as fantastic as it is. There are 80+ Non-Exec roles that anyone in the JCR can potentially be elected or selected to! On this website a few have been outlined, however, these are only those involved in running larger areas of the JCR. Anyone who is a rep for one of the JCR committees, a welfare assistant, a Floreat editor, these roles are also Non Executive Officers of the JCR!
Paid Jobs
Whilst at college there is the opportunity to undertake paid work in the castle to earn money alongside your degree. Not only is this a great way to earn some extra cash, but the jobs give you the opportunity to socialise with a wide group of people in college. These are:
- Undercroft Staff (who are members of the Undercroft Committee that runs the bar)
- Security Staff (who are members of the Security Committee)
- Toastie Bar Staff (who are members of the Toastie Bar Committee)
- Tech Committee Staff (who are members of the Tech Committee)
