Primary Education

Division Head: Rosie Kremer

Hi! My name is Rosie and I am Head of Primary Ed this year. I have volunteered with Primary Ed for the past year and have loved it! I am in my third year studying English Literature, and enjoy running and doing a bit of art in my spare time. Please get in touch if you have any questions!

The Primary Education division of CCA provides an opportunity for volunteers to travel to a local Durham primary school each week and help with various initiatives. Traditionally, we have a variety of different volunteering activities:

  • Homework Club: This involves supervising and supporting pupils with homework that they may be unable to complete at home. It is very relaxed and does not require any preparation.
  • Latin Club: A small group of children partake in a Latin Club run by CCA volunteers. It is an hourly session teaching the very basics of Latin and making it fun!

There are opportunities for reading one-to-one with the pupils, and the division also plans a trip or two each year to a museum or the Castle. If anyone is interested in teaching a one-off session on a skill (such as a sport, music etc), this would be great and can be discussed with the school. All travel expenses are paid for by college, and no previous experience is necessary, so all you have to do is attend one of the DBS sessions. With the challenge of Coronavirus, we hope to be able to volunteer as usual and perhaps offer tutoring to help pupils catch up with work. It is such a rewarding, enjoyable opportunity to meet such enthusiastic children and the school appreciates our help. It is a great chance to help the local community and also allows you to get to know other volunteers.
