Primary Education

Division Head: Isabel Locke cca.primaryed@durham.ac.uk

The Primary Education division is all about providing opportunities to local children that they would otherwise not have access to while creating and maintaining a strong relationship between University College and the local community.

At present, the division works with Laurel Avenue School. We run a Bright Sparks club for gifted and talented students of various ages: these clubs cover all kinds of subjects from history to science. As well as this, we run a Latin club and do one-to-one reading with the children.  The end of a year of volunteering culminates with children from Laurel Avenue coming into the Castle for a day of  art, sport and history.

The division plans to continue all of the after school classes while also hoping to increase the involvement of sports and societies, by asking them to come into the schools on a one-off basis to run workshops with the pupils. As well as this, there are also plans to accompany Laurel Avenue on more educational visits. Last year CCA organised a school trip to Vindolanda. For the next academic year, similar school trips will hopefully provide more wonderful opportunities for the pupils and volunteers, on top of what we have achieved over the past few years.
